New South Wales Built Engines
« on: 21 July, 2011, 05:17:36 pm »
This forum has dealt with Queensland built engines , how about your best or most favoured NSW built engine , also if anybody had a list of NSW engines , i think that would be of interest to us all.
My best NSW engine would be my 1.5 hp Barlo , built in Ballina in 1919.
All the best Warra Boy

At the risk of starting arguments, hair tearing and bloodshed, I will start off the list with a few I have found.

The ones with question marks mean that they are not proven. One such is the Thornycroft. It has been suggested that the Handybilly marine was built during the war.

There is only one Simplex and one Tasman, just maker changes.

I have left out the rebadged engines, such as Buzacott.

Correspondence will be entered into.

Sorry if there are typing or other errors.

I was only joking about starting arguments, anyone is allowed to comment. Quiet so far.

After some very recent research, I am beginning to think that Wee MacGregor should be included. I had heard about the Australian-built Wee MacGregor drag saw many years ago, and was assured that the engine was imported. Supposedly a Vaughn or Wade. Looking at photos on the internet, I see the WMcG is not like either. What it is like is the Canadian WMcG, which, to my shame, I just discovered. Both the Canadian and Australian companies were named Wee MacGregor Saw Manufacturing Co. A curious thing, though, is that the spelling of MacGregor on an engine nameplate, found on the internet, is Mc, not MacG, whereas the Australian ads for the saw all have MacGgegor. Ads found in a Trove search only go from April 1921 to March 1922.
Does anyone know more about this engine?

Eric

g'day eric
you can put buzacott on the list as in 1915, buzacott himself produce 4 engines all a bit different from each other, i have 1 of 2 known survivors, mine is complete and running while the other is very incomplete and heavily frost damaged. mine was originally low tension ignition but was changed to high tension igniton like the other one has as the LT igniton system was a failure. this info was obtained from the buzacott family a few years back from one of the senior members of the family who new about these engines being made. here is a pic of my engine.

Mick, you are right, of course. I forgot that one when typing out the list. The Rosebery Engine Works was only built in 1921.

Hi All
My Wombat Engine
Built around 1999 in the old style.Although not that old,a NSW engine just the same.
Built by Frank Little of St Georges Basin. This is engine number (1)and the only tank cooled Wombat as the  others (about 10)were all hopper cooled of which I had a couple.

Although it is a very nice one, the Wombat is really only a toy. I mean no disrespect to the manufacturer, but this engine is not built for work, only show. What is the horse power?
Sorry, it won't be added to my list.

Hi Eric

There are a couple around that are running pumps and drills. They are rated at 1/3 hp.
I have a little English horizontal 1/3hp that dates to early 1900 with no name tags so make is unknown (is this also a "toy" ????????).
Regards
Peter

How do you have to qualify to be a builder of engines ????.

That's a good question. The engine makers I have on my list are those who built engines for work. That is, the buyers bought them to drive something. My contention is that the Wombat is made for novelty purposes rather than work, and that is certainly not a criticism. And, yes, I quite believe it is capable of work.

Those small English engines were usually sold as casting sets for hobbyists to complete. They were both a hobby and a working engine. Because of their age they are collectors items regardless of their original purpose.

My use of the word "toy" was not a put-down. A precision-made diecast model is classed as a toy as well, though not for a child to play with in the sand pit!

After some more thought, I WILL include it in my list, describing it as a retro-styled engine for vintage enthusiasts. Does that sound fair?

Hi Eric
Sounds fair to me.
Agreed, the Wombats certainly are in a shady area in manufacturing terms.
If the makers eyes weren't so bad he would have designed a couple of more.
He was working on a vertical push rod four stroke engine.
All the best Eric

Hi Eric
It is interesting what do you call those modern made old style engines as you said ‘retro-styled engine’
They are a scaled down models of a full size engines and there is lots out there from all over the world, I have a ‘Huxtable Hot Air Engine’ made by ‘Olds’ Maryborough  and to give an idea of size the flywheel is 140mm diameter and 25mm wide is this a Queensland made engine? And it will drive a very small pump
I think what is lost here is to what ‘Warra Boy’ was asking is engines made long ago when there was no other choice, heavy cast iron, slow RPM  ect ect ect
If you are going to include ‘retro-styled engines’ you will have to start here www.oldengine.org/members/randmingold/  all made in NSW

I have a 'Regimotor'. It would count as being made in NSW (near Newcastle) but I consider it a model and exhibit it as such.
