Marine Engine ID
« on: 08 June, 2014, 01:18:12 pm »
G'day All
I picked up a small marine engine yesterday and have not been able to identify it. I have attached some photo's hoping some one may be able to identify it. There are no markings on it anywhere.

Thanks Hugh

Hi Hugh, I don't know what it is either! Is the carby an Alpha or a Shebler? Alpha carby is Australian coby of the American Shebler. May help with determining its origins.

Kev

Ps could try posting the Old Marine Engine website in America, very knowledgable folks over there.

Well that makes it difficult. Alphas have a small map of Aus on the side of the bowl with Alpha in it, on the opposite side of the bowl.

Looks like a Schebler Model D from what can be seen in your photos.

There is a cutaway drawing and a photo of a Schebler Model D on page 3 of this document:

May well be, they are both very similar.
The Alpha being a copy of the Shebler

G'day All
I spoke to my mate up near Lismore today and he had a look at the photos and thinks it may be a Palmer made by O' Donoghue Bros in Balmain.  He saw another engine 25 years ago while making a visit to a slipway to pickup a marinised Chrysler straight engine for the Sydney Maritime Museums speed boat  Kookaburra. He spotted the engine and asked the owner of the slipway what it was as it stood out as  most of the small marine engines of that type have a one piece cylinder and head. Thanks for all the replies

This engine has a couple of different features; the deep dished flywheel and the magneto drive. I see it but I don't believe it. The magneto runs at twice engine speed! Never seen that before.

I have heard of alleged Australian Palmer engines before, but none proven to be made here. O'Donoghues were agents for American Palmer engines. It is doubtful that they made any, but I am prepared to be proved wrong.

The cylinder head is like a CLAE, but it would not be a CLAE. It's a mystery, indeed.

G'day all
Still have had no luck identifying the engine. However have a bit more information on the carburetor. I took it to sea with me and cleaned it up. On pulling it apart I discovered a manufactures mark on the top cover. It consists of the letter R surrounded by a triangle. I have attached a couple of photo's.
