Southern Cross YB help
« on: 27 August, 2014, 07:16:38 am »
Hello all.
I've had a rather complete Southern Cross YB jump into my possession and I've had an enormous amount of help from Ian (Rusty Engines) and I feel as though I'm imposing on his valuable time a bit too much so here are some questions for you all.
1: How do you take the start dog off the crank?
2: Does anyone know the dimensions of the injector gauge so the injector can be set?
3: Does anyone have some pictures or details of the water hopper that some had?

Cheers and thanks
Scott

PS: It was a good day. I went to have a look at a rotary hoe after some talking to a total stranger at a garage sale and ended up with 3 engines and no rotary hoe.

So now you are looking for another shed to build?
What a good pick up Scott.

Hello Cobba.
Nope is the answer to your question. I haven't even started storing in the hay shed or old dairy yet.

Thanks Ian. I appreciate everything you've done for me and I don't like imposing too much on your time.
Have you got the dimensions of the tank?
I'm in a workshop finishing off the horsefloat and whilst paint dries I thought I'd get the old YB going and seeing I haven't seen one on the rally field, let alone one with a tank, I'd build a atnk. Having a tank on the side may save some room in the shed too hence delaying Cobba's theory of another new shed.

Hi Ian,
Your current fuel tank mounting would indicate that yours is definitly a "stationary" engine.

Hello ian.
I finally got to look at a computer to see your pictures a bit better then I can see on a phone and it seems that YB is the darker shade of green as well.
The YB sitting on the floor of the workshop has the same skids as in your picture as well.

If things get quiet I might just make a tank up. I'll do some scaling against the engine and see what I can find in the off cut bin.

Very nice Scott. May be the best way to go, just scale it off the picture as best you can. A few inches wider than the block and about half or a third of that for the depth. Close enough :o

Hello Cobba.
Yep. About those dimensions is what I was thinking too.

Next job though is to get the start dog off. We had a bit of a go yesterday but all we did was grunt a few times and got dirty. Time to make some 'aids' to lock the flywheel while we try to undo the dog.

Cheers then

Hello all again.
I forgot to mention. I brought the rotary hoe yesterday. I just could not leave it all lonely and behind.

This hobby is infectious isn't it?
Not sure on what way you intend to hold the flywheel but good luck with it all. On small petrol engines I have been lucky enough to stuff some soft sash cord down the plug hole with the piston at BDC then just put some fetch on it. The rope compresses and distributes the force over the top of the piston and has been good so far with no broken pistons.

Hello Cobba.
Been in a welding works at the moment presents no troubles in making a flywheel lock.
On the YB flywheel there are 3 holes for mounting a pulley. All I did was punch some holes in a bit of heavy flat stock. Welded on a bit of 50mm RHS and then bolted it to 2 of the available holes. When bolted on a piece of 40mm RHS is inserted into the 50mm RHS and hay-presto....special tool number 87 is born.
After this it was simply a matter of using my 2' stilsons with a 4' length length of cattle rail over the handle and the start dog was as good as off.

As for infections. Too late mate. Pills don't help anymore.

Cheers Scott
PS: I'll get a picture of tool number 87 when I get home.

Look forward to seeing Part # 87.
Don't talk about pills at the moment. I have been pushing a heap of them down the gullet (under Dr's instruction) to relieve the ongoing and constant pain from the shoulder. Cortisone a week ago has just started to take effect but now another site 4-6" away could do with a similar shot.

Hello all.
I've come across a stumbling block.
Has anyone got a nozzle for the injector? CAV number BDN40S2 which is the same as Bosch 0 434 200 025 or Bosch DN40S2 apparently.

Cheers Scott
