HOWARD 408 ENGINE on HOWARD 2000
« on: 30 September, 2014, 09:28:42 am »
I have an early Howard 2000 with a Howard 408 (NOT 2408) fitted. Does anyone have a drawing for the charge circuit for these engines?  The flywheel has multiple coils and an external rectifier pack. Ignition uses the points to an external ignition coil (like on a car) to the battery.
The wiring between the charging coils and the rectifier pack has been "modified" and I would like to restore it back to the original if I can find a drawing.
     Thanks... Norm.

Hopefully someone has the diagram you need for this one Norm. Maybe an old outboard engine electrical circuit might help as they have multiple coils, 1 for spark and the other is classed as a lighting coil same as a charge circuit.

Thanks for the replys.  I think I am on top of it now and to help anyone else I have attached a photo of the coils and a schematic I have made up. I am not an expert so please take it for what it is.

Thanks... Norm.

I would have liked to be able to help you Norm . I have a Howard 2000, it did not have the Howard engine ,it had a Tecumseh. I took that engine out ,continual starter motor problems . I replaced the engine with a Honda ,Wow it made a difference , purists would not agree but it made life easier.
I have the circuit diagram for the Tecumseh if it helps .
By the way the 13 HP Honda went so easy .

Hope I haven't mislead anyone but the schematic I posted above is wrong. The charge cct on a 408 is positive eth. NOT -ve.

Norm,
I have the manuals and diagrams in a folder somewhere.

A side note is the 408 motor electrics are POSITIVE Earth so make sure you put the battery in the correct way or you will silently fry the rectifier.

Does anyone know the difference between the Howard 408 and 2408? The 408, as far as I know, came out in 1963, and only fitted to the tractor. Being sold as a stationary engine seems to have come later, though this is not proven.

Are you sure it needs a bridge rectifier? Check the voltage while running between each green and the white common you may find that it only uses to half wave diodes to do the job. If the charging voltage is developed between green and the white common this would be the method to use
