This Bates ad from a Dalgety's Review, dated November 1903.

Not sure why they were so high mounted.

Brown, Webb & Coe. Coe??

Thats a gardner engine actually. But yes it is mounted high but that is also because the engine is a "full base" engine where most portable engines were built as half base so they were not up so high

As far as I know, Bates were engine manufacturers, so I didn't take a lot of notice of the details. But, yes, that pushrod on an angle is very Gardner looking.

I knew I had seen pictures of the Trusty, an even higher mounted engine, so did a bit of a hunt and found the one below. Maybe they had seen one of those labels saying "Keep out of the reach of children"!
