AUSTRAL OILERS.
« on: 27 July, 2016, 02:32:07 pm »
Hello Patrick, John54 and other knowledgeable readers,
I am curious as to when the brass encased type of oiler was replaced by the Lewis brand. I suspect that this type was used up to and including 1919, but seek confirmation. My engine of September 1920 is fitted with a true to form Lewis replica, and I have been told that it is period correct for that year and later.
Also, does anyone know the maker of the encased type?
Thanks,
Austral.

From Peter's original register notes:
Up until around C.1919 but possibly later than that, R&T used the American pattern Shell Case Oilers. Records show that R&T were placing orders in May and July 1907 for this style oiler, for use on their Pushrod Austral Oil Engines, with McPherson & Son, Melbourne.
Records from the L917-1920 period show engines up to Test date C.5/1920 were using the shell case pattern oilers.
The first recorded Australian Made "Lewis" oiler used was a No 3 on engine #2843, 6/1920. Both styles continued to be used for some time including a combination of both on the larger engines. For 8HP down the "Lewis" No 3 oiler was mostly favored for fitting to the cylinders.
