Title: Private collection
Post by: AUSDOK on 23 March, 2021, 09:03:06 am
Hi all I  have recently come into a collection of about 20 home made steam engines. The largest is about 4 kilos. The gentleman who built them passed away and his family wanted them gone. I  only had 2 days to collect them all before they went into a skip. These are not part of my normal collecting. I think in respect of the gentleman who built them all,I will keep the collection together. It would be nice to get a small boiler to run them but I suppose that compressed air will do. Thinking of getting a display cabinet to keep them in. Regards Rudy

They sound like they needed a new caring home so good on you for saving them. I like live steam and have only one b ut often look at others. Running them on steam is authentic but comes with the issues of ensuring they are well drained of the condensed steam when finished playing with them or rust will end them quickly. Using compressed air is the easiest and safest way and I would add a small amount of oil in the line as if you are using an air tool to kleep it lubricated inside.
One day it would be nice to see the collection.

They do come up on the usual auction sites but they get snapped up quickly. Size will depend on what you intend to drive but even a small one will drive most things but may need to be filled up more often.
