I saw this engine listed in the Wauchope Auction announcement.

Any ideas what this engine may have been used for? The engine itself looks very nice, however the unusual base and the long crankshaft extension to the flywheel are what caught my eye. No reversing that I can see.

I suppose the large hole in the base may have once surrounded a boiler....but why? The base looks a bit fragile and unsupported in the crankshaft area - perhaps it was once part of something more substantial.

I hope TOMM or whoever else took the photos doesn't mind me attaching them here.
