G Scott & Sons, Fitzroy, Victoria, manufacturers of the Pioneer engine, may well have been pioneers. They are believed to have made the first IC engines in Australia. The engine below is from an 1894 ad.

Wow, an interesting advertisement. Have any of these survived? I guess the chances would be very slim.

Patrick, if you don't have a photo of one at a rally, it is fairly sure that one does not exist!

Seriously, I certainly have not seen or heard of one existing, though that does not say that there is not one in a shed somewhere.

A bit more detail. The firm goes back to at least 1855. Engine production from 1880. Have a look at this Trove article:  http://tinyurl.com/n3pgumb

CGT Weickhardt's "Victoria's Engineering Heritage First Hundred Years: 1842 - 1942" says Scotts built the first gas engine in Victoria in 1884. The 1880 date above refers to an engine they built to drive their works. Quantity production may have only started in 1884.

Victoria, always a leading state, most likely produced Australia's first gas engines. The Pioneer first, followed by the Victory.
