Souther Cross pump jack
« on: 14 November, 2015, 10:01:23 pm »
A friend has restored this Southern Cross pump jack and would like to know what parts are missing from the crosshead. He would like either a photo or drawing if possible. He does not have Internet so I will be passing on any replies.

Same pump jack was still available in 1982
Some of the reasons why SC went broke they did not up date their machinery

Thanks Ian and Cobbadog. Looks like the pump clamp is a casting that may be difficult to replicate. These pump jacks would have looked very out dated by 1982.

Hello Ian.
They did produce other pump jacks to keep up with 'fashion' though didn't they?
I have a flash looking Southern Cross pump jack sitting in the shed. I cannot recall the model off the top of my head sorry. HDG or C maybe??

My way of thinking is they still produced the 'old gear' that was proven and also made 'new style' gear as well.
The old farm pumper been a prime example of 'old school' and the high speed diesels like the EWD, ETB, EUC, EFD's etc etc been 'new'....all made pretty well together at the one time period if I recall.

Cheers Scott

Hi Scott
Southern Cross did make a fully enclosed pump head as early as 1961 a HD patten  the third letter was the stroke length HD-G 15"
BUT SC kept on making the old one when the should not of, that is not good business sense
Everything you buy when new models comes out the old one is finished so you have to update,What would happen to cars if they kept on making the old model years latter  when they are trying to sell the new model
SC engines are not that good/modern for the time frame, everyone was using Alloy SC was not and when they tried to play catch up with a V twin 20hp alloy engine which would of been great everybody else had already done it and had a name for themselves
SC started selling in 1974 a Perkins diesel as it was greater HP than their own ED-G engine at the same time frame also started selling   Villiers , Briggs & Stratton, 6 cylinder Ford and 2, 3, 4, 6 cylinder Itilian VM diesels  just to try and stay in business

Hello all again.
Ian's comment brought up a thought from my simple little mind. I wonder if Holden still made The Kingwood or FX (48-215 for the enthusiast) or if Ford started to remake the XT-Y-W....would they sell?
I'd buy a new Kingswood  :D

Hi Scott
Some die hards would, but safety features would no allow it
I wounder if they could put a "The Kingswood" body on a new model

I've got a couple of these SC DJ pumpers. One is the short version and the other is the tall version.

What does the thingy that actually sucks the water out of the ground look like?

I also noticed that the original poster of this thread was missing the clamps. So was I on one of the DJ's I have, until a few days ago when a fellow down at Grenfell put up a pair for sale on eBay,
see: http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/182206224845. So they do turn up occasionally.

Cheers

The pump is usually left behind as it is down the bottom of the bore in the water

These jack heads only did what a windmill did but were engine driven

The pictures are the best I have from a 1933 catalog and also they were unchanged for ever

In my 1989 catalogue they advertise the draw plunger pump which was a big improvement on the earlier ones where you had to pull the pump with all the piping to replace the leathers. With the draw plunger pump you only had to pull the rods which were a lot lighter. Interestingly they don't advertise any of their own diesels in this catalogue just lister-petter diesels. Also no prices in this catalogue either. They had caught up with a bit of modern technology and advertise solar powered bore pumps and inverter power systems.

Hi Ian,

So, I was thinking how I would have to setup this DJ pump to display at rallies if I wanted to have it actually pumping water. I suppose I'd need to have it stand at least the height or length of the plunger pump thingy above the ground. Those pictures show the inlet at the bottom but where is the outlet that you could pipe into a container to recycle back to the inlet?

Cheers
