It doesn't get much better than this unless you are one of the workers that is. Gondang Baru is the most antiquated of Java's many sugar mills and much of the equipment shown was 100 years old, particularly the larger stationary steam engines.....

Thanks Kim - that brought back a few memories. Actually, when I started working in  sugar mills over 60 years ago many Australian mills were very similar to the one in the link. We had a few less people on some of the stations where some mechanical assistance had been provided but still had a very large workforce doing hard and unpleasant jobs manually. Unlike Gundang Baru we were still using horses for pulling cane trucks over the weighbridge, for shunting full and empty sugar trucks, operating the night cart and garbage dray, and for a variety of jobs around the mill yard. One of my more futile jobs at one stage was to keep daily time sheets for all the horses so their time could be allocated to the relevant accounts.
