This is a photo of my Ferro, type F, 5.5hp. I have some info on them but have a lot of trouble dating these engines.

That Ferro is an impressive outfit. These engines were quite big sellers in Australia. Basically a marine engine, they were often bought as a bare engine and the owner mounted them on a home-made base.

Ferro Machine & Foundry Co, Cleveland (USA, not Qld), built engines from about 1908. I suspect engine building tapered off not many years after that as their contract foundry work increased. They cast engine parts for Chevrolet, for instance. They were in business into the 1930’s at least.

We used to own this one, mounted on a cast base. The carburettors on these engines were very large.

Eric is correct, they were used as primarily a marine engine, but were sold here mainly as a portable or basic engine to set up as the user required. Mine was used as on a shearing plant in the Victorian mallee and has never seen a boat! It was complete on recovery and only needed unsiezing, and reassmbling to run. And yes the carby is big.

Looking for a base for a Ferro engine like the one in Eric's picture. I now have a Ferro engine to go on one.

you're right Ian, they are a marine engine, the one I have has a longer crankshaft to be used as a stationary engine as per Eric's photo

A little late on this (don't remember to check in every so often)...
Ferro was a very well known and well regarded marine engine builder here in the States...
A 1910 Motor Boat ad stated had 10 models , 3 to 25 HP. 1, 2 and 3 cyl's, 3 bore sizes, all 2 port, 2 cycle...
A 1911 Motor Boat article stated was going inro stationary engines, basically the marine engines on an iron base, with other details..
Entered the automobile field with  three V8 models used in several cars in the 1914-16 etc heyday of early V8s. Undated engine list shows five V8s and a V12 marine racer...
Fell into financial difficulties post-war, .believe they became Ferro Eng'nrg Div of Ogalbay-Norton Company (still in existence?)_ but my scribbled notes unclear, nor did I note when engine production stopped, but might've neen as early as 1918??
