Southern Cross pump ID and repair
« on: 22 August, 2019, 10:32:53 am »
Hi all,

Found this old beast on my property - it's supposed to be pumping water from a bore to a tank a km or so uphill past my house.  It's powered by an electric motor and it goes - the piston moves up and down smoothly - but there ain't no pumping going on.  Can anyone tell me how old it is, what parts might need replacing and where they're available (if they are)?  And are these things tricky to take apart, assuming I can get through the rust?

Would be great to have it going before bushfire season starts.  Regardless, I'd like to see it resurrected anyway as it looks like it should have plenty of life left in it.

Any tips much appreciated!

Sam

Hi Sam
seeing that the rod moves up and down there is nothing wrong with the "pump head"
The issue would be with the pump which is down the bottom of the bore hole (however deep that might be)
It could be worn buckets or the valves not working
Age NO they were made the same for many years

Thanks for this Ian - the diagrams are helpful (where did you find them btw?).  I'll contact Southern Cross to see if they have any idea about parts...

Once you pull the pump from the well you should be able to source the parts at your local pump store.
Southern Cross closed down many years back but most parts should be able to be sourced but rustyengines (Mr Southern Cross) should have a better idea of where to get the parts but first you need to know what parts you want.
