True is not the brand, but a description. Kelly & Lewis advertised their diesel engines as ?true diesel?, meaning they were not Brons or surface ignition.

Hi Eric it is a " TRUE " Diesel by name
But look at the engine it is a re-badge YB Southern Cross
Y type (mark YB) year 1938
Also more interesting supplied to Buzacott

I think we could read this name plate as "TRUE TYPE" "DIESEL ENGINE" rather than a "TRUE DIESEL" "TYPE ENGINE" The implication is the engine is a TRUE cold starting high compression diesel. The maker's name is absent so it was left open for re sale by clients under their own names. Perhaps more engines will be found with this plate.

A Trove search will show a lot of engines advertised as True Diesel. I still see this as a descriptive term. Two examples below.

I can see what you are saying Eric but could they too have been selling the name sake as badged engineering like Buzacott, Southern Cross and Kelly & Lewis? It is a curly one for sure.

Hi Eric
Where TRUE diesel is mentioned in Trove they are talking about method of operation
Terms used on Trove
**Probably bringing of the true Diesel engine**solid Injection" etc meaning the method of operation
The engines were not called "True"
The Buzacott diesel engines were called TRUE up front as a brand name
