Lister HR2 21hp diesel 1978
« on: 22 August, 2020, 08:54:43 pm »
Hello all
Have searched the Forum for anything on my topic, Lister HR2 an air cooled diesel, 21.5hp @1900rpm. Nothing came up from my search.
I have acquired such a beast, but am on the hunt for a starter motor. I can get one from England, but $1200+ (and shipping included) is a bit too much for my budget.

Does anyone have an HR2 that they can suss out what starter motor it has please?  (Brand and model if possible).

This motor turns over smoothly on decompression, but is a bit too heavy for me to keep up the effort when I drop the decomp levers.

I haven't been on the Forum for a while, I trust you all are well and coping with these strange times.

With thanks in advance
Teddy in Tassie.

G'day Teddy, has been a while since you were last here, I think.
Anyway some possible choices for you to follow up are an aftermarket starter motor. See if Google or a search engine can offer a conversion for it. Some Pommy stuff are interchangeable so if you have a stuffed one see if a Morris truck one fits or similar.
Next there is a Lister Forum based in the UK and they may have a replacement starter motor details and they will share the info.
Next and trickiest is to count the teeh on the flywheel and match a starter motor with the right amount of teeth and the correct direction which is something you will need to know CW or CCW dirction.

Lister Forum member claims you can buy them on Fleabay $320.00 out of the USA so have a look on that site. He did not say if the price was AU or US.

Hey Cobba
Thank you for your considerable help. I just posted a long reply, which did not come up on the Forum. I will post again tomorrow and see how we go.

Hello Hori Hogarth and Hugh W.
That bloke near Middleton, I know of him , he may be a mine of information, but when asked he usually replies "The information is all mine!!"
Thank you for your kind message of welcome Hugh.

I'll post more, with a picture later today, or at least try.

Hmmm, something wrong.
Again I sent a message and posted a picture, all failed. That's twice now.
I'll check the picture, it might be too big , maybe.

At least while you sort out a starter motor you can still crank it.

Hey Teddy, the trick is to separate the 2 decompression levers and start it on one lung first if it is too tricky to throw both over compression. I am lucky with our SR2 Lister I can still throw it over with both connected but for how much longer who knows.

Hi Teddy. Years ago my father bought an LD1. In the winter I could not get up enough speed to start it. We changed from using SAE 30 oil to SAE10W as recommended by Lister. I could then start it quite easily. We did change back to 30 grade oil in the summer. I doubt if multi grade oils would be as thin when cold as the 10W. Might be worth a try. Another thought, have you checked your engine has a ring gear fitted to the flywheel.

Hello all
Thanks Cobba, I'll try that.
Good to hear from you Rudy, trust you are all well there.
Hugh, that's a good call too. Certainly we have had a winter of cold nights down here.
Yes, the flywheel has ring gear, in perfect as new condition, as you might expect!!
Busy times here now, but I'll keep at it when I can and let you know how it pans out.
Thank you all for your support and interest.
Teddy.
