Brush generator
« on: 12 September, 2020, 06:18:14 pm »
Hi all .I have a BRUSH generator which produces (I hope) 240vac and 32vdc. I would assume it will need some sort of excitation to be able to work. Can anybody help with a connection diagram ? E9840063 ? Any help appreciated. Regards Phil.

What model is it? I have books for a couple of models, although mine is 240 and about 20 volts (12 volt start and charge)
The number will be something like SCAF117.
I'll have to look up what the drawing number for mine is.

Also, excitation is from residual magnetism. I've had to flash mine several times. The DC side is used to start the engine on some types and this gives plenty of residual.

Sounds very similar to mine. I'm on call this week, so will be the weekend before I can find the books.

Hopefully I shrunk it small enough to stick. I realise this shows a different drawing number, this might supersede yours.

Thankyou Jarrod. Shame electrical drawings/ccts are so radically different to electronic drawings/ccts. !!!

Are there any pictures of the termination box or how they are referenced? regards Phil

Nothing on the terminal box. Depending on what it was originally, many of these were Lister Start-O-Matic units.
I have a couple of circuits, too big to scan.

If you can read the terminal markings on yours, I'll see if any of it matches up. Otherwise, are you handy with a meter? Tracing wires is the usual way to sort these out. I can talk you through that, if you are not confident.

My copy (only a photocopy, so no better that how it scanned) does show a resistor mounted inside one grille and a rectifier mounted in the other. Yours may be like this. Tracing wires from terminals to these bits, exciter brushes and slip ring brushes may be required.

The couple of Lister drawings here show a current transformer driving the series field. Does yours have one? (mine doesn't, but it's been heavily modified, having been found abandoned in PNG about 35 years ago by the previous owner) There are some terminal names on these drawings.

Clear pictures / terminal markings of your terminal box may help. Mine is long gone.

Mine appears to be the top one Fig. 4. Just by looking only. Lots of rusty terminations in there. Has a 4 brush dc commutator ,single phase slip rings, 2 adjustable resistors and a selenium "Rectum Fryer" rectifier. ....Phil
