Ship or Locomotive Boiler
« on: 30 June, 2018, 02:49:20 pm »
Hi,
I only just joined so please forgive me if I'm not doing this correctly.
My friend has found what appears to be the pressure relief valve of a steam boiler.  As we're presently researching an old shipwreck which supposedly carried railway lines (& possibly a locomotive) we were wondering if this presumed valve could be from a locomotive or a steam ship.
thank you

G'day and welcome old boiler.
Nice find. Think it will be tricky to determine where it belonged but sooner or later someone will pop up and say that was used in a certain situation.

Hi Old Boiler,
This photo has intrigued me for a while and to me and the lever is not substantial enough for pressure relief so I am thinking it may be a vacuum breaker and is part of an early locomotive/train braking system and this lever may be attached to a "breakaway valve" that would activate in the event of a separation between loco and wagons.
