Engine clarification
« on: 05 January, 2009, 01:45:40 pm »
Hi All, especially Eric (unable to send pics via private message)

Tidying up (many) loose files and came across the following pics.
Unsure if they are one and the same engine (same brand but different models) or 2 different engines.  I think the first 2 may be the De Dion/Illman engine and the 3rd a Lewis.
(as always) Any help greatly appreciated.
Best wishes, jayvee

Photos 1 and 2 are of an Illman engine, probably built at Dowlingville, SA. Here is a photo of the same engine showing the make. The ignition system is owner-built.

You are right, the 3rd photo is a Lewis. You posted a Lewis photo in the old forum which was not the same engine as this one, so that makes 3 in existence at least.

Thanks for the extra Lewis photo.

Wayne, I had not seen your Lewis before. It is quite a bit different from the ones previously shown. As it looks to be a smaller and lighter engine, I would suggest that it is their water-cooled motorcycle engine.
Lewis advertised a farmers motorcycle that doubled as a farm engine.
